The first Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Spine procedure was performed at Wellkin Hospital on 22nd of May 2021 by Dr S. Karunagaran and team.
The 50-years old female patient was suffering from lumbar spine pain. The pain had aggravated over time and restricted her mobility. After an MRI, an Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy was proposed, which is a latest minimally invasive spine surgery.
Endoscopic spine surgery is an advanced, state-of-the-art form of minimally invasive spine surgery done using a small incision and specialized instruments to surgically treat spinal disorders. It is designed to provide the patient a quicker recovery time and less recurring pain than traditional spine surgery methods.
This patient had Percutaneous Endoscopic Transforaminal Lumbar Discectomy (L4 L5) for treating her lumbar disc on the 22nd of May. The skin incision made was only 8mm, under X-ray guidance. The endoscope was placed percutaneously through a tube and the discectomy was performed using endoscopic camera and special instruments. The incision was closed by only a single stitch. The entire procedure took 90 minutes, and the patient was relieved of her leg pain and could move her leg immediately after her surgery. She could stand and walk the next day.
The patient was extremely satisfied with the entire experience. She said, “I was unable to bear this pain, I was living with it for a long time. Science and technology have made great advancements. I did not know about this technique before. The doctor took all his time to explain to me in detail how the procedure will take place. After surgery, I am feeling better. Before I was in a wheelchair and now, I can walk. I am hoping to get back to work in 4 weeks and drive soon”
